The next platform to Australia’s future

David Murray joined the Commonwealth Bank in 1966 and has been its Chief Executive Officer since 1992. The Commonwealth Bank is one of the four major banks in Australia and is also one of Australia’s top 10 listed corporations. David’s banking career has included branch banking, corporate finance, strategic planning and retail executive management.

In 2000, David conducted a merger with the Colonial Bank, the largest financial services merger in Australia’s history. He played a leading role in the bank’s acquisition of the New Zealand retail bank, ASB Bank. He was also central in the Bank’s acquisition of the Sate Bank of Victoria, at that time one of the largest retail bank mergers to have taken place in the world. He was appointed to the board of directors at the International Monetary Conference in June 1997 and is a member of the General Motors Australia Advisory Board.

In March 1999, the Prime Minister appointed David Murray to the APEC Business Advisory Council, and in August 1999 the Treasurer appointed him to the Financial Sector Advisory Council. He has been Chair of the Australian Banker’s Association since May 2001.
