Pat Turner scholars and alumni gathered at The Australian National University last week to explore the strength of lived experience at the 2026 Pat Turner Forum.
Scholars and alumni heard from a range of colleagues in academia and the public service on how lived experience can be used as a powerful lever for meaningful and influential outcomes.
Former Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Linda Burney spoke about her distinguished career in the public service and politics, inviting scholars and alumni to consider how their lived experience influences the way they lead.
“Leadership is about the people who have shined in your life; knowing your values; and knowing your story,” Ms Burney said.
“Your story is much bigger than you think it is. Growing up and where you grew up is part of you.”
Ms Burney encouraged scholars and alumni to believe in people, to practice kindness and to be proud of their roles as public servants.
“Development of policy and legislation is the heart blood of government. You should be very proud of the role you play in that.
Ms Burney also acknowledged Dr Pat Turner AO, namesake of the scholarship program.
“Pat Turner is a force of nature – terrifying, loving and fierce.”
At the forum, scholars and alumni also heard from Dr Sarah Bourke, Sonja Stewart and John Love – gaining insights to apply to their studies, research and work in the Australian Public Service.
The Pat Turner Scholarship is a one-to-three year, full-pay scholarship for any level of postgraduate study at ANU or Charles Darwin University for high performing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander APS 4 to SES Band 1 APS or eligible PGPA entity employees.
