My fellow scholars, remember that you have stardust in your bones, ancestors by your side, and the vast universe residing within your soul. Within us all lies an unbreakable inner strength, a force that grows with every challenge you overcome.

The Sir Roland Wilson Foundation has officially welcomed the 2025-26 commencing scholars.

In Semester 2 2025, one scholar commenced their PhD research at Charles Darwin University (CDU), while nine scholars commence at The Australian National University (ANU) and CDU in Semester 1 2026. Commencing scholars are:

Sir Roland Wilson Foundation Chair Dr David Gruen AO encouraged scholars to take inspiration from scholarship namesakes Sir Roland Wilson and Dr Pat Turner AM.

“Everyone in this room has something in common – an understanding that the strongest policy and programs are grounded in the best available evidence and knowledge,” Dr Gruen said.

“Whether you are at ANU or CDU, I encourage scholars to make the most of this opportunity to step away from the day-to-day work of public administration, to focus and think deeply about your studies and research.

“We believe in your potential to bring your newfound knowledge, expertise and influence back into the APS and to make an impact.”

ANU Chancellor the Hon Julie Bishop shared her confidence in the contributions that scholars would make to the unique partnership the university shares with the Australian Public Service (APS).

“These scholarship programs are a terrific example of how the university is fulfilling its mandate, providing the APS with world-leading expertise and ideas,” Ms Bishop said.

Pat Turner scholar Tiana Brockhurst gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the commencing scholars.

“On behalf of the 2026 scholars, thank you to the Foundation Board and selection panel, who saw something special in us and believe we can become part of that group,” Ms Brockhurst said.

“Thank you to our agencies and departments who trusted our capabilities and were willing to show their support.

“Thank you to the ANU, CDU, our supervisors and our mentors who will guide us as we navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead.”

Ms Brockhurst also encouraged scholars to seize opportunities with confidence and courage.

“My fellow scholars, remember that you have stardust in your bones, ancestors by your side, and the vast universe residing within your soul. Within us all lies an unbreakable inner strength, a force that grows with every challenge you overcome.”
